Flexible Packaging

The flexible packaging business utilizes rolls in numerous functions including; feeding, squeezing, pulling, printing, insulating, and conducting electricity. Typically, rolls are covered with elastomeric compositions to allow the creation of a uniform pressure zone called a "NIP". To insure the nip region remains constant, the properties of the roll covering must be stable and not degrade with use. The selection of the roll covering must take into account the physical properties of the covering at rest (static) as well as physical properties of the covering while in use (dynamic). To be effective, a roll covering must not change appreciably in either the operating environment (e.g. exposure to solvents of other chemicals) or in the dynamic state.

Rubber coverings for flexible packaging applications vary significantly and are related to equipment, chemistry, environment and functionality. Each covering should be specifically designed to meet the operating criteria of the application.

Blown Film - Tower Nip Rollers

In blown film applications, tower nip rollers, because of their location, pose unique circumstances for the maintenance department. Maintaining or changing out tower nip rolls can be a hazardous job due to accessibility, height, and temperature of the working environment. These circumstances encourage the use of coverings that are very stable.

Tower Nip Rollers are designed to draw film from an extruder die and collapse the film bubble. This is accomplished with two rollers that are nipped together at the top of a tower. One roller is usually elastomeric while the other roller is chrome, harder rubber, Teflon®, or a proprietary hard coating.

Dura-Coat® elastomeric roll coverings exhibit high co-efficient of friction that is capable of drawing the film through the nip without excessive grip that could lead to wrap-ups. Dura-Coat® coverings also exhibit outstanding abrasion and cut resistance that is essential when knives can cut the roll surface.

The operating environment in a tower nip application can be impacted by the environment and temperature variances. Temperatures in excess of 150° F are not un-common. The significance of temperature as it relates to roll coverings must not be overlooked. Traditional tower nip coverings that are exposed to elevated temperatures for long periods will actually harden on the outer surface. This can have a dramatic impact on coefficient of friction, and mechanical properties of the cover. The inherent properties of Dura-Coat® coverings prevents the hardening that is associated with heat aging.
