Corona Treating Coverings

Poly films, foil, and other substrates must be treated to accept printing inks or lamination to certain substrates. The most common treatment is a high voltage corona discharge that is applied to the film as it passes over a special roller (Corona Treater). Roll covering materials used on Corona Treaters include Epoxy, Ceramic, Silicone, Hypalon® and EPDM. Valley Roller can assist with proper cover selection. The roll core size is critical to proper cover selection. Roll coverings must have excellent dielectric strength, ozone resistance, heat, and abrasion resistance in order to withstand the Corona Treater environment. They also must be blemish-free or else the high voltage applied at the Corona Treating stations will burn through the covering at the point of contamination.

Valley Roller offers several coverings that have been specifically designed for Corona Treater applications. These coverings have been very successful in their own right, but consideration for the operating environment is essential to select the most suitable covering.

FDA Coverings

Rubber coverings are used in variety of applications in contact with food and potable water. Due to the close contact of these articles with items intended for human consumption, lawmakers around the globe have produced appropriate legislation in order to avoid any health hazards that might be associated with their use. In the United States the Food and Drug Administration regulations outline the specific parameters for rubber articles intended for repeated use in contact with food. Rubber Rolls intended for producing, manufacturing, packing, processing, preparing, packaging, transporting or holding food are subject to the FDA 177.2600 statues. Valley Roller will certify that our FDA coverings contain the specific ingredients and appropriate levels. It is the responsibility of the end-user to obtain the necessary FDA approval for the roll itself.

Low C.O.F. Coverings

Coefficient of friction is an important property for roll coverings. As it relates to the roll applications, there are many factors which may influence friction in the system. A wide variety of variables including load, speed, lubricant viscosity, surface finish, presence or absence of chemical deposits, hardness, and temperature are involved. Certain applications require the roll covering to release, which means the roll covering must exhibit a low coefficient of friction. The roll covering will have a direct impact on C.O.F. depending how the compounds are formulated. This property cannot be ignored since the covering can have a direct impact on the performance in use as is the case when a roll is exposed to a sticky substrate or media.

Valley Roller offers several coverings that have been specifically designed for high release (Low C.O.F.) roll applications. These coverings have been very successful in their own right, but consideration for the operating environment is essential to select the most suitable covering.

High C.O.F. Coverings

Coefficient of friction is an important property for roll coverings. By definition “friction is independent of the area of sliding solids and is directly proportional to the load”. As it relates to the roll applications, there are many factors which may influence friction in the system. A wide variety of variables including load, speed, lubricant viscosity, surface finish, presence or absence of chemical deposits, hardness, and temperature are involved. Certain applications require the roll covering to drive, which means the roll covering must exhibit a higher coefficient of friction. The roll covering will have a direct impact on traction and this is dependant on how the coverings are formulated. This property cannot be ignored since the covering can have a direct impact on the performance as is the case when a drive roll experiences slippage in use and the energy required to drive the rolls increases.

Heat Resistant Coverings

Some roll applications require elastomeric coverings that withstand high temperature. To function properly at elevated temperatures coverings for must maintain elastic properties over the life of the covering.

Valley Roller offers several coverings that have been specifically designed for High temperature roll applications and are ideal for Cast Film, Heat sealing, Waxing and Laminating applications. . These coverings have been very successful in their own right, but consideration for the operating environment is essential to select the most suitable covering.
